Rationale
This qualification is for people who are in regular contact with children and young people through their work or voluntary activities, and who have some responsibility for ensuring the safety and welfare of the children and young people in their care. This qualification is also suitable for home-based learners.
The qualification is aimed at individuals whether or not they already hold professional qualifications (eg. nursing, youth work, teaching, social work etc), particularly if they have not previously specialised in child protection and/or wish to extend, update and demonstrate their understanding of safeguarding issues relevant to their particular setting.
The scope of the qualification takes candidates from an understanding of the social and historical contexts for safeguarding, up to the point where concerns are identified and must be followed up by someone who has specific responsibility for safeguarding issues within an organisation. It also touches on the processes which are involved once concerns are reported to Social Services, including the impact this may have on the worker, the child/young person and their relationships.
