About the Qualified Teacher Framework
Our teaching portfolio champions professionalism.
We adhere to standards introduced by the 2007 workforce reforms for teachers, tutors and trainers.
The reforms introduced the Qualified Teacher Framework. The framework provides a structured pathway to 'licensed practitioner status' (QTLS or ATLS) through a combination of role specific qualification standards, professional formation and CPD.
The framework aims to bridge the status gap between licensed school teachers and teachers delivering adult learning, and ensures all learners are taught by a formally qualified and recognised professional.
What does this mean for teacher training providers?
As a teacher training provider you will need to ensure that your teaching staff:
- register with the Institute for Learning
- qualify, or hold an equivalent qualification, according to the new professional standards for their role
- fulfil CPD and professional formation according to their role.
The requirements apply as statutory regulation for those teaching in FE colleges, including sixth form and specialist colleges in England, and as a requirement of LSC funding contracts, for those teaching in other areas of the learning and skills sector in England.
They do not apply to learning support practitioners, Assessors or Verifiers.
What do I need to do?
You will need to determine staff qualification needs by establishing:
- when they joined the workforce. We can help through our online flash tool
- the teaching role they do - either 'associate' or 'full'. For an explanation, view LLUK guidance.
