Cycle Maintenance and Repair - Vocational (No. 3993 )

This qualification is aimed at those who wish to gain skills and knowledge in the building, service, repair and maintenance of all types of cycles, from children through to sports cycles.

Qualification structure

To complete the qualification learners must pass 9 practical tests. The tests are as follows:

  • Fitting a rear brake, cable and lever.
  • Servicing a cotterless bottom bracket.
  • Replacing a rear inner tube.
  • Servicing a Sturney Archer three-speed hub.
  • Replacing the spindle in a rear wheel.
  • Replacing the chain ring on a one-piece BMX crankset.
  • Building a rear wheel.
  • Truing a rear wheel.
  • Changing the frame on a ten speed bicycle.

At the end of the course, learners will have the necessary skills to identify and build the various types and qualities of cycle available in Britain and ensure that cycles are in a safe and roadworthy condition, giving due regard to the British Standards Safety requirements for cycles.

How is the qualification delivered and assessed?

There are no entry requirements for this qualificaton. The course must be delivered by a City & Guilds approved centre. City & Guilds does not specify any period of time for this programme and the organisation of the course is at the discretion of the centre. Learners will be assessed by 9 practical tests. Centre approval

In order to offer this qualification, organisations which are not already City & Guilds centres must apply for centre and qualification approval. Existing City & Guilds centres will only need to apply for qualification approval
