These qualifications replace the 3014 NVQs in Hairdressing and Barbering.  

Level 1 recognises the skills required to work as an assistant in a salon which include: shampooing, conditioning and blow drying hair, supporting reception duties and assisting technical staff with services.

Level 2 recognises the essential skills required to work as a hairdresser or barber, which include: basic cutting, colouring and styling.

Level 3 is the target qualification to be recognised as a professional hairdresser or barber.  The skills developed at Level 2 are built upon and advanced skills demonstrated which include the creative combination of techniques, business and management skills.

6 mandatory units
2 optional units (1 from each group)

Level 2 Combined Hair Types
9 mandatory units
1 optional unit

Level 3 Hairdressing
4 mandatory units
5 optional units (only 1 can be chosen from group 2, all 5 can be chosen from group 1)

Level 3 Barbering
5 mandatory units
4 optional units (only 1 can be chosen from group 2, all can be chosen from group 1).

The qualification also forms part of the Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing (9701) in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

How are learners assessed?

This is a work-based qualification where learners will demonstrate they are competent in a salon environment.

The main form of assessment is practical observation and there are online and paper assessments of essential knowledge.

Progression

Depending on the role your learners are in and the level they take and complete, they can progress on the higher levels of this qualification.
