Governance and committees

City & Guilds is run with the help of the wide experience and careful scrutiny of our committees and governing bodies.

While strategically directed and managed by our Board of Directors, the City & Guilds Group also benefits from the wide experience of our governing bodies and committees.

Our President is HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who has served in the role since 1951.

The Council

Our governing body, the Council, ensures that the running of City & Guilds represents a wide spectrum of views and can draw on a multiplicity of talents. It's made up of around 70 members.

The Executive Committee

Our Executive Committee members ensure that City & Guilds continues to pursue its charitable objectives - and that it remains financially robust. The members are regarded as Trustees by the Charity Commission for the City & Guilds Group.

The Council elects the Executive Committee from among its members.

The sub-committees

To ensure we fully scrutinise our finances, policies and strategy, seven sub-committees report to the Executive Committee. These look at:

  • nominations
  • finance and management
  • remuneration
  • audit and risk
  • learning and assessment policy
  • international
  • the City & Guilds Centre for Skills Development.

The Quality and Standards Committee

Quality assurance within City & Guilds is monitored by our independent Quality and Standards Committee. The Committee also makes the final decision in appeals.

Advisory Committees

A number of Advisory Committees have been established to provide advice on issues relating to Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and major industrial sectors where City & Guilds has an interest.

Our charter and charitable status

The City and Guilds of London Institute (City & Guilds) is a Royal Chartered Institute (RC117) and a registered charity (no.312832). Our Royal Charter was granted by Queen Victoria in 1900.
