World Skills

Young people from around the world show off their vocational skills in the world's leading skills competition.

We're the proud supporters of Team UK in the 2009 WorldSkills competition in Calgary, Canada. And in 2011 it's all happening in London, as the UK hosts the 39th WorldSkills competition.

What is WorldSkills?

Previously known as the Skills Olympics, WorldSkills is an international competition showcasing excellence in vocational training.

Every 2 years, hundreds of highly skilled young people compete in their trade or specialism - from mechatronics to floristry to hairdressing.

They battle against the clock for success in workplace challenges, in front of a live audience - and come away knowing they have a world-class skill.

Who are the competitors?

Competitors are 22 years old or under. They're students, trainees and employees.

Usually they've proved their skills in regional and national competitions in their own countries.

The UK holds over 60 regional events to find the talented young people to form Team UK.

Why is WorldSkills important?

For competitors, taking part in WorldSkills is an invaluable learning experience. Many go on to excel in their chosen careers and promote excellence in vocational education and training.

City & Guilds - proud sponsors of WorldSkills London 2011

The honour of hosting the 2011 WorldSkills competition belongs to the UK. Young people from around the world will come to London to show what they're capable of in over 40 different trades.

It's a fantastic event for demonstrating the value of vocational skills - and City & Guilds has committed £1 million to support the competition.

London to host WorldSkills 2011: press release.

City & Guilds Director-General says:

'For too long the vocational route has been seen as inferior to academic studies, but succeeding in the skills sector takes just as much dedication, determination and hard work. Participating in WorldSkills drives forward individuals' aspirations, provides them with a way to benchmark their skills and to recognise their achievements.'
