2008 Lion Award winner Luke Taylor is a full time student at Grimsby Institute. Luke studied for an Entry Level Certificate in Adult Numeracy. Luke's story is special because he is partially sighted and had an illness at birth which affected his motor skills and memory.
Luke says:
'Doing this qualification has given me the confidence to know I can achieve. When I leave college I would like to get a job and live a normal life. It is an honour to have won this award and I feel very proud.'
Paul Davies
In 2004 Paul achieved his Medal for Excellence in Licentiateship in Panel Beating. Paul believed that the boost in confidence would allow him to open his own business.
Paul says:
'I feel very proud about winning the City & Guilds Medal for Excellence, it shows all my hard work was worth it. By winning this award it will hopefully push me onto bigger and better things.'
Dick Onians
Dick, a medallist from 2003 is a Lecturer/Trainer in Woodcarving. He also had the honour of being chosen for the President's Award, to be presented to him at Buckingham Palace.
Dick says:
'I designed the Woodcarving Course and started teaching it in 1992 as I felt there needed to be a structured course in this subject. I am delighted to receive this award as I feel that sculpture is my work and teaching is an enjoyable hobby.'
Christine Robertson
Christine achieved a medal in 2000 for her efforts in Level 3 Modern and Traditional Upholstery.
Christine says:
'Very early on when I started my business I was asked by a prospective client to show them my affidavits or qualifications I had been given. I was more than happy to show them my medal and certificates, they were very impressed and gave me the job.'
