What are the qualifications about?
An Award or Certificate in Safeguarding Children and Young People will help you increase your awareness of safety and wellbeing issues, and give you the confidence to deal with them effectively.
You'll look at issues in depth, including the circumstances in which neglect can occur, the responsibilities of individuals and how to create safe environments.
The qualification can help you build on your career in a wide range of organisations that deal with children or young people.
Who are they for?
A qualification in Safeguarding Children and Young People is for everyone from nursery nurses to youth workers who want to extend their experience in this field.
You'll need to be working with children or young people, either in paid employment or as a volunteer. This includes home-based jobs such as a nanny or foster carer.

- What sorts of things do they cover?
You'll cover things like:
- understanding children and young people's development needs
- creating safe environments for children and young people
- legal frameworks for safeguarding children and young people
- what to do when there are concerns about children and young people's safety and welfare
- How will I learn and be assessed?
To get a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you learn with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. VRQs are usually assessed by your training provider using assignments, practical task, exams or online tests.
For the Award/Certificate Safeguarding Children and Young People you'll do practical demonstrations and written assignments. - Which level is right for me?
This qualification is only available at level 3. It's relevant to you if you're already working with children or young people and now want to learn more about protecting their safekeeping.
- How long do they take?
Guided learning hours Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are:
- Award:110-120 hours
- Certificate: 350 hours
This is a rough guide - each centre decides its own timescales and you can often learn at your own pace.
- What jobs could they lead to?
A qualification in Safeguarding Children and Young People could help you in your job as a schoolteacher or social worker, or any other role working with young people. If you enjoy working with children and young people, you could also move on to these other qualifications:
- Level 3 N/SVQ in Children's Care, Learning and Development
- Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Playwork

- How would we deliver and assess them?
To deliver a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. You will need qualified internal assessors.

In order to offer the Award/Certificate in Safeguarding Children and Young People, you will need:
- suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment
- suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards

First become a centre - then you can apply for qualification approval.
Already a centre?
You can get automatic approval for the Level 3 Award in Safeguarding Children and Young People if you currently offer:
- Level 3 Certificate in Safeguarding Children and Young People
You can get fast-track approval if you offer the:
- N/SVQs and VRQs in Children's Care, Learning and Development
