What are the qualifications about?
This Certificate ensures you are up-to-date with the latest industry regulation on wiring and the safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems.
It covers the 17th edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, which came into force in June 2008. These regulations are recognised by the British Standards Institute as a British Standard (BS7671).
Who are they for?
If you're a practising electrician, you must comply with the regulations for electrical work - this Certificate helps you do that.
If you were certified for the previous edition of the IEE wiring regulations (which came into force in June 2001), you can take a one-day refresher course. If you are a newly-qualified electrician or have not achieved a qualification against the last amendment or the 16th edition. You'll need to do the full course.

- What sorts of things do they cover?
You'll focus on meeting the standards of the latest IEE Wiring Regulations, including:
- essential aspects of the safety, selection and erection of electrical equipment
- inspection and testing.
- How will I learn and be assessed?
To get a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you learn with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. VRQs are usually assessed by your training provider using assignments, practical task, exams or online tests. For the Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations, you'll do a multiple-choice exam.
- Which level is right for me?
Level 3
You're a practising electrician who needs to update your certification to meet the latest edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (you can take the refresher course if you have met the entry requirements). Alternatively if you're a newly qualified electrician who needs to get this certification for the first time (you can take the full qualification).
- How long do they take?
Guided learning hours Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are: -
- Refresher course: 7 hours - you can complete it in a day
- Full qualification: 30 hours.
- What jobs could they lead to?
The Certificate is essential for all practising electricians or who haven't achieved a qualification against the last amendment of the 16th edition. It could also lead to a career as an inspector or surveyor. You could move on to qualifications in Inspection, Testing, Design and Certification of Electrical Installations (2392).

- How would we deliver and assess them?
To deliver a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. - What resources do we need?
In order to offer the Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations you will need:
- suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment
- suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards

- How can we get approval to offer them?
New to City & Guilds? First become a centre - then you can apply for qualification approval. Already a centre? Download and complete the qualification approval form (PDF) and send it to your local City & Guilds office.
- Are there any learner eligibility requirements?
It is expected that learners must have achieved one of the following qualifications which addresses the requirements for BS 7671 in order to be allowed to enter this qualification. Centres are required to ensure that only suitable candidates are entered onto the qualification and must hold a copy of each candidates below certificate(s) for external verification monitoring. Failure to hold such records will result in sanctions being applied and approval being removed.
- City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671: June 2001 (2381), or
- City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology Installation (Building and Structures) (2330-07), or
- City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology Electrical Maintenance (2330-08), or
- City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Electrical Installation Part Two (2360) (from 1 January 2004 onwards only)
- City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Knowledge of Electrical Installation Engineering (2351) (from 1 January 2004 onwards only, and only if achieved as part of an Electrotechnical Advanced Apprenticeship completed post 1 January 2004.)

- Do these qualifications replace any others?
The Level 3 Certificate in Requirements for Electrical Installation replaces the Level 3 Certificate in Requirements for Electrical Installation (2381).
