  • What sorts of things do they cover?

    You'll cover things like:

    • the theory and practice of teaching
    • principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation
    • confidence, communication and interpersonal skills
    • your professional role and responsibilities.
  • How will I learn and be assessed?

    You learn with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments.

    You will demonstrate what you've learned through both practical skills assessments and assignments that cover the theory of teaching. These assessments include practical skills demonstrations and written examinations.

    You will also complete 30 minutes of teaching practice. In addition, keeping a Teaching Practice Portfolio and a Reflective Learning Journal is encouraged.

  • Which level is right for me?

    Level 3
    You are new to the Lifelong Learning Sector or don't have much experience and want a solid introduction to basic practical teaching skills and theory.

    Level 4
    You are new to the Lifelong Learning Sector or have some experience but are not yet qualified. You want to get a deep understanding of basic practical teaching skills and theory.

  • How long do they take?

    Guided learning hours
    Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are:

    • Level 3: 30 hours
    • Level 4: 30 hours.
  • What jobs could they lead to?

    Achieving this qualification can help you get started as an educator in the lifelong learning sector.

    Possible jobs include: 

    • teaching assistant or learning support assistant
    • training instructor
    • training manager.

    After taking the Award, you can progress on to other qualifications that will help you achieve Associate Teacher, Learning and Skills (ATLS) status or Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status:

    • Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector - this qualification is for those who would like to become associate teachers
    • Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector - for those who would like to work as a full teacher, including anyone teaching literacy, numeracy or ESOL.

  • How would we deliver and assess them?

    To deliver this qualification, you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. You will also need qualified internal assessors.

    You will assess learners through a combination of a portfolio of evidence, practical skills demonstrations, and written examinations. You will also observe learners as they complete 30 minutes of practice teaching.

    First become a centre - then you can apply for qualification approval.

    Already a centre?
    Centres in England can get automatic approval for the Level 3 Award if they currently offer:

    • 7302 Certificate in Delivering Learning
    • 7307 Certificate in Teaching Adult Learners
    • 7407 Certificate in Further Education Teaching.

    Centres in England can get fast-track approval for the Level 4 Award if they offer:

    • 7302-03 Diploma in Delivering Learning
    • 7407-01/02/03/04 Certificate in Further Education Teaching.
