The Certificate in Engineering can help you enter the engineering industry - creating and maintaining anything from pipework or welded metal to complex electronic equipment.

This is the main knowledge-based vocational qualification to get you started. You can learn practical skills to suit a variety of engineering roles, from welding and sheet metal manufacturing to vacuum forming and moulding.

  • What sorts of things do they cover?

    Depending on the pathway you choose, you'll cover things like:

    • identifying different types of equipment used for manufacture
    • workplace safety
    • using formulae to solve engineering problems
    • preparing equipment and materials for welding
    • drawings and specifications.
  • How will I learn and be assessed?

    To get a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you learn with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments.

    VRQs are usually assessed by your training provider using assignments, practical task, exams or online tests.

    For the Certificate in Engineering you'll do practical demonstrations and assignments and a written or online test.

  • Which level is right for me?

    Level 2
    You might be new to engineering - a school leaver, or someone retraining for a career change. Or your job might involve some engineering skills as part of a larger role, particularly in a small business. You want the basic underlying knowledge and practical skills for an engineering role.

    Level 3
    You might be retraining for a career change, or you might already have some engineering experience. You want to develop a wider underlying knowledge and some specialist practical skills.

  • How long do they take?

    Guided learning hours Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are:

    • Level 2: 300 hours
    • Level 3: 480 hours.
  • What jobs could they lead to?

    The Certificate in Engineering offers you many skills, which could lead to a jobs like:

    • engineering operative
    • engineering maintenance technician
    • foundry moulder/core maker
    • mechanical engineering technician
    • sheet metal worker
    • toolmaker/machine setter
    • welder

    After taking this qualification you could progress to an NVQ in Engineering or an engineering Apprenticeship.

  • How would we deliver and assess them?

    To deliver a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. You will need qualified internal assessors.

    For the Certificate in Engineering there'll be practical demonstrations and assignments and a written or online test.

  • What resources do we need?

    In order to offer the Certificate in Engineering, you will need:

    • suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment
    • suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve  industry standards.

    First become a centre - then you can apply for qualification approval.

  • Are there any learner eligibility requirements?
    Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.
  • Do these qualifications replace any others?
    • The Level 2 Certificate in Engineering replaces Applying Engineering Principles
    • The Level 3 Certificate in Engineering replaces Progression Awards in Engineering.
