- What sorts of things do they cover?
You'll cover:
- Communicating, teamwork and developing yourself.
- Cleaning and maintaining internal and external surfaces and areas, and soft floors and furnishing, and protecting hard floors.
- Cleaning confined spaces, high-risk areas, food areas, glazed surfaces and facades.
- Cleaning washrooms and replenishing supplies.
- Dealing with routine waste and non-routine waste.
- Deep-cleaning equipment and surfaces.
- Carrying out maintenance and minor repairs.
- Performing street cleansing manually and by machine.
- Working safely at heights.
- Using a water-fed pole system to clean windows and facades.
- Health and safety.
- How will I learn and be assessed?
To gain an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.
NVQs are assessed at work or in a simulated workplace. For each unit, your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, or looks at a portfolio of work that you've built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well. For the NVQs in Cleaning and Support Services, you'll be assessed using on-the-job observation, testimony from your supervisor or senior colleagues and through performing tasks in a simulated environment.

Level 2
You are working as a cleaner and want to demonstrate that you have a solid understanding of the skills and knowledge required for your role. You may also be thinking about moving into a leadership role within a cleaning team in the future.
- How long do they take?
The NVQs in Cleaning and Support Services usually take:
- 6 months to 1 year full time
- 1 to 2 years part time.

In order to offer the NVQs in Cleaning and Support Services, you will need:
- suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment
- suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

All learners must be employed in cleaning services. You must make sure they can access all the resources they need to complete the qualification.
