Who are they for?
The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is for anyone working as or planning to become a full teacher in further, adult or continuing education.
You should have Level 3 skills in the subject you intend to teach, though a qualification is optional. You'll need access to 150 hours of teaching practice in a recognised lifelong learning location to do this qualification.

You'll cover things like:

- How will I learn and be assessed?
To get the Diploma in Teaching in the lifelong learning sector, you learn with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments. You will demonstrate what you've learned through both practical skills assessments and assignments that cover the theory of teaching. These assessments include practical skills demonstrations and written examinations. In addition, you will keep a Teaching Practice Portfolio and a Reflective Learning Journal. You will also complete 150 practice teaching hours.

You work or want to work as a full teacher within the lifelong learning sector. You want to become officially qualified by achieving Qualified Teacher, Learning & Skills (QTLS) status. - How long do they take?
Guided learning hours
Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are 360 hours. - What jobs could they lead to?
The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector could help you progress in a role as a:
- full teacher in further, adult and community education, for example, as a further education lecturer
- full teacher in work-based learning - full teacher in the voluntary sector.
This Diploma qualifies you for Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. To gain full QTLS status, the next step after taking this qualification is to go through the process of professional formation with the Institute for Learning (IfL).
Once you've achieved QTLS status, you can meet your continuing professional development (CPD) requirement through an Award in Developing Embedded Approaches to Literacy, Language and Numeracy. If you decide you would like to specialise in teaching Mathematics or English after taking the DTLLS qualification, you could progress on to an Additional Diploma:
- Additional Diploma in Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector
- Additional Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector
- Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector.

- How would we deliver and assess them?
To deliver the DTLLS, you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. This includes ensuring that candidates are able to access appropriate facilities to allow them to complete research assignments. You will also need qualified internal assessors. You will assess learners through a combination of a portfolio of evidence, practical skills demonstrations, and written examinations. Learners also complete 150 practice teaching hours. Download and complete the qualification approval form (PDF) and send it to your local City & Guilds office. - Are there any learner eligibility requirements?
All learners should be qualified to Level 3 or be able to demonstrate level 3 skills in the subject they intend to teach, plus have reasonable levels of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT skills. They also must have access to 150 hours of teaching practice in a recognised lifelong learning location. You must make sure they can access all the resources they need to complete the qualification.
