  • What sorts of things do they cover?

    This qualification only contains one unit which provides you with a background and understanding to this industry.

  • How will I learn and be assessed?

    To get a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you learn with your training provider - maybe through practical sessions, group discussions or assignments.

    VRQs are usually assessed by your training provider using assignments, practical tasks, exams or online tests. The Certificate in Industry and Organisational Awareness is assessed using multiple choice online examinations and practical demonstrations.

  • Which level is right for me?

    Level 2

    You have some knowledge and basic skills in the leisure industry - probably from a role where you work under supervision. You want to learn more about the industry. You might be completing an Apprenticeship in Active Leisure and Learning.

    Level 3

    You've worked in the leisure industry for some time, probably in an operative, team leader, supervisory or trainee management role. You want to learn more about the industry. You might be completing an Advanced Apprenticeship in Active Leisure and Learning.

  • How long do they take?

    Guided learning hours

    Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are:

    • Level 2: 30 hours
    • Level 3: 60 hours

    This is a rough guide - each centre decides its own timescales and you can often learn at your own pace.

  • What jobs could they lead to?

    Achieving one of these qualifications gives you background knowledge that can be valuable in a number of roles, including:

    • health and fitness instructor
    • holiday centre worker/manager
    • leisure centre assistant/manager
    • playworker
    • sports coach
    • sports professional.

    These qualifications form part of the Apprenticeship in Active Leisure and Learning (Level 2 Award) and Advanced Apprenticeship in Active Leisure and Learning (Level 3 Award).

  • How would we deliver and assess them?

    To deliver a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. You will need qualified internal assessors.

    The qualification focuses on the need for awareness, and centres are encouraged to work closely with employers to ensure candidates are given appropriate opportunities to develop knowledge, understanding, values and skills of the Active Leisure Industry and those organisations operating within it.

    The Certificate in Industry and Organisational Awareness is assessed using global online assessment (GOLA). You will need to set up a GOLA profile in order to offer online examinations to learners.

  • What resources do we need?

    In order to offer the Certificate in Industry and Organisational Awareness, you will need:

    • suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment
    • suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve  industry standards.

    First become a centre - then you can apply for qualification approval.

    Already a centre?

    Download and complete the qualification approval form (PDF) and send it to your local City & Guilds office.

  • Are there any learner eligibility requirements?

    Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.

  • Do these qualifications replace any others?
    No, these qualifications don't directly replace any others.
