These flexible Awards cover all the skills you need to work with a chainsaw in trees using ropes and a harness.
You can learn everything from maintaining your chainsaw to aerial rescue to complex sectional felling technique, in bite-sized units to suit your needs.
Who are they for?
An Award or Certificate for Arborist Chainsaw Operator is for anyone who needs to demonstrate competence with a chainsaw - perhaps to work in tree surgery, landscaping or arboriculture.
You don't need a current work placement to take these qualifications, and you don't need any previous qualifications or experience.

- What sorts of things do they cover?
Depending on the units you choose, you can cover things like:
- maintaining a chainsaw
- the basics of cutting wood and felling trees
- working in ropes and a harness
- performing aerial rescue
- pruning techniques
- sectional felling techniques.
- How will I learn and be assessed?
You'll develop your knowledge by learning in a group with your training provider. You'll also get plenty of hands on experience to develop the practical skills you need.
If you feel you already have the skills and experience you need, you can choose to just take the assessment.
For each unit you take, you'll be assessed by giving a demonstration of your skill on a real task - for example, pruning a tree or using a harness. Your assessor will ask you questions during the task so you can explain what you're doing and demonstrate your knowledge.
- Which level is right for me?
Level 2
You may be just starting out in tree surgery or landscaping, or you may have used a chainsaw before and want a recognised qualification to prove your competence.
- How long do they take?
Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are:
- Award: 16-104 hours
- Certificate: 120-136 hours.
- What jobs could they lead to?
These qualifications could help you work in tree surgery, landscaping or arboriculture. You could begin by learning the basics of arborist chainsaw work, and add to your qualifications by taking extra units as your skills develop.
If you're interested in using a chainsaw on the ground, preparing the site and sending equipment up to workers in trees, you could move on to:
- Award for Ground Based Chainsaw Operator
- Diploma in Chainsaw and Related Operations.
After completing this qualification you could add to your skills by taking other qualifications relevant to your particular job, for example:
- Safe Use of Turf Maintenance Equipment
- Safe Use of Mowers
- Safe Use of Pedestrian Controlled Power Driven Cultivators
