You could also take the qualifications if you're just starting off in the sector, or if you have a different job that sometimes involves advocacy skills.

  • What sorts of things do they cover?

    The qualifications cover the basic principles and purpose of independent advocacy, how to effectively respond to the advocacy needs of different groups of people and, with the Diploma, how to make decisions on behalf of individuals subject to Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

  • How will I learn and be assessed?

    The centre you attend will be responsible for devising a programme of study. You'll mainly work with your trainer and occasionally organise some of your own learning.

    You will also be assessed in a work setting, in real-life situations. You'll need to compile a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates how you performed against each learning outcome.

  • Which level is right for me?

    The Certificate in Independent Advocacy or Diploma in Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy -Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards usually takes:

    • 6 months to 1 year full time
    • 1 to 2 years part time.
  • How long do they take?

  • How would we deliver and assess them?

    All centres are responsible for devising a programme of study - usually trainer-led courses plus private study. Learners will also need to be assessed in real life situations and must put together a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their competency against each learning outcome. 

  • What resources do we need?

    In order to offer the Certificate in Independent Advocacy or Diploma in Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy -Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards , you will need:

    • suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment
    • suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

    All learners must be currently providing independent advocacy support or using advocacy skills as part of another role. You must make sure they can access all the resources they need to complete the qualification.
