Your questions
... if you're taking these qualifications
- What sorts of things do they cover?
Though there are seven different routes to getting a City & Guilds Electrotechnical Services NVQ, all of them cover the core skills an electrician requires, including:
- preparing an electrical installation or project
- conducting an installation or maintenance work
- inspecting and testing work that has been done
- ensuring safe working at all times.
- How will I learn and be assessed?
To gain an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.
NVQs are assessed at work or in a simulated workplace. For each unit your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, or looks at a portfolio of work that you've built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well.
For this NVQ, you will do your learning on the job, working with experienced electricians and installers. You then gather a portfolio of evidence that shows how you have met performance requirements.
- Which level is right for me?
You have more specific experience in particular types of work. There are 6 areas to focus on: the one you choose will probably depend on the work you currently do.
- 2356-31 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Installation - Building and Structures)
- 2356-32 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
- 2356-33 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services (Installing Instrumentation and Associated Equipment)
- 2356-34 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services (Installing Public Lighting Systems and Associated Equipment)
- 2356-35 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services (Electrotechnical Panel Building)
- 2356-36 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services
(Electrical Machine Repair and Rewind).
- How long do they take?
There is no set time for completing this NVQ - each centre decides its own timescales and you can often learn at your own pace.
- What jobs could they lead to?
With a City & Guilds Electrotechnical Services NVQ, you have shown that you meet the National Occupational Standards for the industry. That can be a great launchpad for a range of careers, from inspection to installation.
It can also help you move into a role as an electrical engineer, as well as broadening your prospects with your current employer.
If you want to continue your learning, you could also consider the following qualifications from City & Guilds:
