With the Award in Barista Skills you'll gain the knowledge and skills you need to prepare and serve hot and cold drinks in any environment.
Who are they for?
The Award in Barista Skills is for people who work as or want to work as a Barista within any environment, such as restaurants, café's and hotels.
You don't need any experience. You may already be working in the hospitality industry, but it's not a requirement to take this qualification. We recommend that you have access to an espresso machine and grinder in order to practice making drinks in your own time.

- What sorts of things do they cover?
You'll cover things like:
- ingredients and equipment
- drink recipes and preparation
- presentation of beverages
- serving of beverages
- customer service essentials.
- How will I learn and be assessed?
For the Award in Barista Skills you'll learn in a group environment with your training provider. You'll be assessed using a practical assignment where you'll demonstrate your ability to prepare and serve drinks. You'll also complete a short answer test covering the background knowledge essential to the barista role.
- Which level is right for me?
Level 2
You want to gain a basic qualification in hospitality. You may be working in hospitality already, or looking for your first job as a barista.
- How long do they take?
Guided learning hours
Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are:- Level 2: 20 hours.
Usual course length
- Completing the Award in Barista Skills is flexible and is according to your local provider.
Each centre decides its own timescales and you can often learn at your own pace.
- What jobs could they lead to?
This qualification could help you get a job as a barista or move forward in your current job.
To advance further in the hospitality sector, you may want to continue onto an additional qualification such as:
- Level 1 and 2 Certificate/Diploma in Professional Food and Beverage Service (7103)
- Level 1, 2 and 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery (7100)
- Level 3 Diploma in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership (7250).

- How would we deliver and assess them?
To deliver the Award, you must have tutors and assessors who have experience making hot and cold drinks, and who have or are working towards a relevant qualification in training and assessing.
You will assess learners on 1 assignment, which includes practical tasks and a short answer test. This assignment is set by City & Guilds and marked by staff within the centre using City & Guilds' marking guidance.

- What resources do we need?
You will need to provide learners with access to a range of equipment:
- traditional espresso machine
- espresso grinder
- filter coffee machine
- source of boiling water
- electric juicer
- blender
- barista kit, including a digital scale, latte jug, cappuccino jug and other essentials.
While not mandatory, we also recommend that you provide access to:
- bean to cup (automatic)
- bulk brewer
- visual bowl juice dispenser/post mix juice dispenser
- commercial water boiler
- chocolate machine (powder automatic).
You will also need qualified and experienced delivery staff.

- How can we get approval to offer them?
New to City & Guilds?
First become a centre - then you can apply for qualification approval.Already a centre?
Download and complete the qualification approval form and send it to your local City & Guilds office. - Are there any learner eligibility requirements?
Anyone can take this qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it. In particular, it is recommended that learners have access to an espresso machine and grinder, or other equipment as necessary, in order to practice drink-making skills in their own time.

No, this qualification doesn't directly replace any others.
