- What sorts of things do they cover?
If you're just starting out in beauty therapy, you might cover things like:
- working safely and effectively
- preparing the salon for your customers
- helping with reception duties
- applying make-up or facial skincare products
- helping with manicures and pedicures.
If you're more experienced you'll cover specialist beauty therapy skills such as airbrush make-up or Indian head massage. You'll also develop important business skills with units on promoting services and planning safety procedures.
- How will I learn and be assessed?
To gain your Certificate or Diploma in Beauty Therapy you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.
You might learn at work or at a training centre with a realistic working environment, you will be working on paying clients. By the end of your qualification, you'll be demonstrating your skills on paying clients.
You'll be assessed as you learn. For each unit your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, look at a portfolio of work that you've built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well.

Level 1
You're just starting out in beauty therapy. You might be still at school or working as a trainee therapist or therapists'assistant in a salon. You want to prove your skills at salon duties, health and safety and assisting with facial and nail treatments.Level 2
You have some experience and want to show you have the skills of a salon technician, beauty consultant or beauty therapist. You want a more in-depth qualification that suits your career path.Level 3
You've worked in a salon, spa or similar job for some time, or have gained your level 2 beauty therapy/nail services qualification You want to demonstrate specialist skills, focusing on either beauty therapy, make-up, nail services, massage or spa therapy. - How long do they take?
Guided learning hours are the hours you spend learning with your training provider or on your own. The guided learning hours for this qualification are:
Level 1 Certificate in Beauty Therapy: 184 hours.
Level 2 Diplomas in Beauty Therapy
- General: 464 hours
- Make-up: 365 hours
- Nail services: 329 hours.
Level 3 Diplomas in Beauty Therapy
- General: 545 hours
- Massage: 407 hours
- Make-up: 364 hours
- Spa therapy: 509 hours
- Nail services: 563 hours.

Completing a Certificate or Diploma in Beauty Therapy usually takes:- 1 years full time

- Are there any learner eligibility requirements?
Anyone can take the Level 1 qualification, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete it.
