Diploma in Hairdressing - Vocational (No. 6902 )

The qualification is available at levels 2, 3 and diplomas. The intermediate vocational qualifications focus on the development of the underlying principles and practical skills required in the hairdressing industry. They are also approved by Habia - the standards setting body for hairdressing.

There are also several short VRQ certificates for specialised areas such as cutting hair, providing face massage and African Caribbean women's hair.

Who is it aimed at?

Level 2 is designed for newcomers wanting to work in specialised areas. Level 3 is designed for hairdressers wishing to develop general skills in specialised areas. These qualifications are centred on learning the theory then practising the skills.

How is the qualification delivered

The qualification is taught in a classroom environment. The learning and assessment setting will include a real or simulated, but realistic working environment

For each of these qualifications, learners will be required to complete the following assessments:

  • one assignment for each mandatory generic unit
  • one assignment for each mandatory technical unit
  • one assignment for each chosen optional unit
  • one multiple-choice online examination (GOLA) covering the mandatory generic units

These qualifications are approved for pre-16 learners. For the practical assessments, pre-16 learners must demonstrate their practical skills on training blocks with the consultation and aftercare advice being carried out peers or colleagues.

There are no formal entry requirements.

Progression

These qualifications provide underpinning knowledge and practical skills related to the Level 2, 3 NVQ in Hairdressing and SVQ in Hairdressing and the Level 2, 3 NVQ or SVQ in Barbering. Learners that successfully achieve one of these qualifications and that are in employment or have access to work placements can progress to the NVQ or SVQ in Hairdressing or Barbering at Level 2, 3. The mandatory units within this qualification provide generic service skills, so that the successful student will be well prepared for a variety of service sector careers.

For young learners in particular, completing this qualification will be a sound preparation for employment or entry to all or part of an apprenticeship in this or a related sector.
