3978-66/86 Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care Services (Adults' Advanced Practice) Wales & NI is now closed for registrations.

These qualifications are not being replaced by City & Guilds in Northern Ireland. For centres offering these qualifications in Wales, please refer to the Health and Care Learning Wales website for details of the replacement and new qualifications available from 01 September 2020.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You will cover areas like:

  • the assessment of individual needs
  • the planning and review of care programmes
  • procurement and tendering
  • risk management
  • effective governance
  • domiciliary care management.

For this qualification, you will learn in a training centre or in your workplace.

You will be assessed at work. For each unit your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, or they may look at a portfolio of work that you have built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well.

You are responsible for running a facility that provides services for vulnerable children, adults or both. You might be an assistant or deputy manager, or a manager who has not yet achieved a recognised vocational qualification at this level.

To be a manager of adult residential and domiciliary services or children's homes you need to have this qualification.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

The Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services can be delivered either in your training centre or in the workplace.

You will assess learners mainly through a portfolio of evidence, which must be gathered in the learner's workplace. For knowledge-only units you can choose to assess learners either in or out of the workplace.

You can get automatic approval if you currently offer:

  • 3172-41/42 Level 4 NVQ in Health and Social Care - Adults / Children and Young People
  • 3078-41 Level 4 NVQ in Leadership and Management for Care Services.

All learners must be employed as managers in the social care service sector. You must make sure they can access all the resources they need to complete the qualification.

Level 5

This level will suit you if you are responsible for running a facility that provides services for vulnerable children, adults or both. You might be an assistant or deputy manager, or a manager who has not yet achieved a recognised vocational qualification at this level.

All the pathways share five core units:

  • Use and develop systems that promote communication
  • Promote professional development
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Develop health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices in health and social care or children and young people's settings
  • Working in partnership in health and social care, and children and young people's settings.
