About these qualifications

The Level 2 Certificate in Accounting and Level 3 Diploma in Accounting qualifications are designed to provide opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge to the competency to complete day-to-day accounting tasks.

The Level 3 Diploma will enable you to work independently or act in a supervisory role. It may also act as an effective progression route to higher education or professional certification.

You may wish to use these qualifications as part of an Apprenticeship programme - Intermediate (level 2) or Advanced (Level 3) in England and Foundation (Level 2) or Apprenticeship (Level 3) in Wales.

These qualiications are supported by learning materials from Sage UK that includes a time limited edition of Sage 50 Accounts.

Who are they for

The Level 2 Certificate is designed for those entering the accounting profession or looking gain a formal qualification for their experience in an accounting role. It is the ideal first step for those aspiring to a career in accounting and business.

The Level 3 Diploma provides skills that will enable you to work independently, deal with non-familiar activities or act as a supervisor. It is also useful for those looking to looking to go on to higher education or gain a professional membership.

What's involved in delivering this course?
To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified tutors and assessors, either trained internal members of staff or recruited specially. You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards including access to appropriate software where required.

There are no eligibility requirements for these qualifications, but it would be expected that you will have successfully completed the Level 2 before progressing on to the Level 3, or have relevant experience in an accounting role. What's involved in studying this course?
The qualifications will develop accounting skills and knowledge in a number of areas, such as: 
  • banking procedures 
  • maintaining control accounts 
  • preparing and recording financial documentation 
  • spreadsheet software 
  • prepare accounts for partnerships 
  • computerised accounts software 
  • preparing and completing VAT returns.


You will learn on the job in the work environment or in the classroom and be assessed using a variety of methods to build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competency across the qualification and to the relevant level. Assessment methods include: 
  • workplace assessment – observation and qitness staments 
  • work-based assessment (workplace simulation) 
  • oral presentation and questioning.
Which level is right for me?
Level 2
Ideal for you if you are new to accounting, wishing to develop your business support skills or certificate your experience in an accounting role.
Level 3
You have some experience in accounting, and are expected to produce reports or supervise others, or have successfully completed the Level 2 Certificate.

You may wish to use these qualifications as part of an Apprenticeship programme - Intermediate (level 2) or Advanced (Level 3) in England and Foundation (Level 2) or Apprenticeship (Level 3) in Wales.
