A qualification in Construction helps you understand the principles behind construction and design. You'll develop the critical judgement to take on high level technician roles in the construction industry.

These qualifications could help you develop your career to become a senior technician supervising others, or to work as a senior manager.

The Technician Certificate in Construction can help you get into the construction industry either in the UK or around the world.

The Technician Diploma or Advanced Technician Diploma in Construction are both for people already working in the construction industry who want to increase their skill set and knowledge base to get ahead.

The Advanced Diploma is also ideal if you want to move into higher education with advanced entry.

What's involved in delivering this course?

To deliver an International Vocational Qualification (IVQ) you'll need to provide your learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification. You will also need qualified internal assessors.

For the Technician Certificate in Construction learners are assessed by practical demonstrations or assignments, and a multiple choice exam.

For the Technician Diploma or Advanced Technician Diploma in Construction, learners are assessed on a combination of multiple choice exams, practical demonstrations or assignments, and written exams.

All learners must have experience and be employed in the construction industry. You must make sure they can access all the resources they need to complete the qualification.

What's involved in studying this course?
The Technician Certificate covers the principles and practice in construction skills:
  • painting and decorating
  • plumbing
  • electrical installation.
The Technician Diploma or Advanced Technician Diploma includes:
  • drawing techniques
  • applied scientific techniques
  • environmental science
  • construction techniques
  • site surveying
  • architectural design.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You're new to construction and want a grounding in the industry, or you're already working in a basic construction job and want to expand your knowledge. You may be planning to work in several different countries.

Level 3
You've worked in the construction industry for some time - you have plenty of experience, and your work might involve supervising others or managing resources. You want to develop your skills further, perhaps to move into a senior technician role or a position with more responsibility.

Level 5
You are a first-level manager, or preparing to be one, within the construction industry. You're highly skilled and want to continue your professional development - perhaps so you can work as a quantity surveyor or to gain specialised training at a high level. You might also be looking to start your own business.

If you have an interest in the construction industry, you could also move on to these other qualifications:

With a Technician Diploma in Construction you could gain employment across a range of disciplines such as a technician, senior technician, supervisor or manager. There are also options for further learning. After you complete the Level 3 qualification you can progress to other qualifications in construction and management, for example:

  • Level 5 Advanced Technician Diploma in Construction
  • Level 5 Advanced Technician Diploma in Quantity Surveying.

With an Advanced Technician Diploma in Construction you'll be able to take on jobs requiring a high level of responsibility, personal initiative and critical judgement - for example, as a chief technician or a first-level manager. You could also progress to Level 6 qualifications in Construction, quantity surveying or management - or move into higher education with advanced entry.
