About these qualifications

The NVQ in Optical Retailing demonstrates your on-the-job skills working in an optician's shop or other optical retailer. You'll show that you can help customers find what they need, solve their problems and keep good records.

Depending on the level and options you choose, you can also demonstrate more specialised skills, like carrying out routine optical screening procedures, fitting spectacles and providing a contact lens collection service.

An NVQ in Optical Manufacturing can prove your competence in manufacturing spectacles, contact lenses or eye prostheses. It covers a range of skills you need in the optical manufacturing industry, and is recognised by the Sector Skills Council and leading employers.

Who are they for

An NVQ in Optical Retailing is for anyone currently working in the optical retailing industry. You might be a retail assistant or a more experienced retail manager.

An NVQ in Optical Manufacturing, is for people working as an optical technician involved in manufacturing spectacles, contact lenses or optical prostheses.

What's involved in delivering this course?

To deliver an NVQ, you need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

For the NVQ in Optical Retailing, assessment is on a portfolio of evidence, such as completed tasks.

What's involved in studying this course?

For the NVQ in Optical Retailing, you'll cover things like:

  • processing prescriptions and ordering glasses or lenses
  • keeping good customer records
  • arranging effective displays of spectacle frames
  • monitoring and solving customer service problems
  • selling frames, lenses and contact lenses.

For the NVQ in Optical Manufacturing, you choose to specialise in 1 of the following:

  • spectacles
  • contact lenses
  • eye prosthesis.

The units you complete will depend on your choice of specialisation, but you cover general workplace skills - things like working effectively, fulfilling orders and health and safety.

To gain an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

NVQs are assessed at work or in a simulated workplace. For each unit your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, or looks at a portfolio of work that you've built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
- NVQ in Optical Retailing

You have some knowledge and basic skills in the optical retailing industry - you're probably a retail assistant. You want to increase your skills and take on more responsibility.

Level 3 - NVQ in Optical Retailing

You've worked in the optical retailing industry for some time - you have plenty of experience, and your work might involve supervising others or managing resources. You want to develop your skills further, perhaps to move into a management role.

Level 2 - NVQ in Optical Manufacturing
You already work as an optical technician manufacturing spectacles, contact lenses or optical prostheses. You want to build on your existing skills and experience to maximise your job opportunities.

After taking the Level 2 qualification, you could move on to the Level 3 NVQ in Optical Retailing.
