City & Guilds Licentiateship (LCGI), Graduateship (GCGI), and Membership (MCGI), recognise personal achievement and the application of professional knowledge in the workplace, allowing progression to the very highest levels of achievement.

Holders of City & Guilds Senior Awards are entitled to use appropriate post nominal letters (LCGI, GCGI, MCGI) and holders of an LCGI, GCGI and MCGI are invited to attend the annual graduation ceremony, where they will wear the approved formal dress of a gown, hood and mortar board.

They are also eligible to join the City & Guilds Association (CGA).

Who are they for

The Licentiateship is suitable for team supervisors and those at first line management level. This award recognises five years of professional development, after achieving a level 3 qualification.

What's involved in delivering this course?
Centres are expected to support their staff in ensuring that their knowledge remains current of the occupational area and of best practice in delivery, mentoring, training, assessment and verification, and that it takes account of any national or legislative developments.

Senior Awards are neither qualifications nor programmes of study.
The Senior Awards recognise professional achievement and expertise. The onus is on the candidate to provide a body of evidence which demonstrates how they have met the standards.

What's involved in studying this course?
To qualify, you will need:
  • a level 3 pass
  • a further career qualification
  • five years' experience at supervisory or first line management level subsequent to your level 3 pass.

Each route to LCGI has specific qualification criteria, details of which are available from the Archive Services department. As a minimum requirement, applicants must hold a level 3 qualification (e.g. NVQ level 3, City & Guilds Advanced Craft, BTEC National Diploma). Career extension evidence may take the form of a further qualification (e.g. NEBS Management Certificate/ILM Full Management Certificate, or City & Guilds Further and Adult Education Teachers Certificate), and confirmation of satisfactory performance in a supervisory or managerial role for applicants over 26 years of age.

Applicants must provide evidence that they have performed competently in a relevant work environment. Achievements may take the form of an industrial qualification (e.g. an industry-recognised apprenticeship) or confirmation from a current or recent employer of at least five years' relevant employment, on headed paper.
