About these qualifications
The City & Guilds scheme 3847 Awards/Certificates in English and Mathematics Skills (QCF) have been designed to create stepping stones for learners working towards GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications and to recognise and accredit the progress that learners make on this journey.
The qualifications comprise a broad range of small units, each underpinned by the National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy. The qualifications are mapped to the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Core Curricula and the Functional Skills and GCSE subject criteria where appropriate.
There are a number of different pathways through the qualifications allowing candidates to focus on the skills they need to help them progress. For example a candidate may choose a small award or a larger certificate covering a wider range of skills. Alternatively candidates may choose to work on a specific skill area eg. reading, and accredit just those skills.
Who are they for
The qualifications have been designed to provide adults (19+) with a flexible, relevant and highly personalised route to certification, and the opportunity to secure the skills needed for their next steps in life, work and study.
