City & Guilds reveals city’s rising number of learners

A new study from City & Guilds has revealed a number of cities across the country have developed a notable taste for learning. The study, which tracked the uptake of its most popular vocational qualifications in the UK over the last 10 years, highlighted the following: 

  • Electrical qualifications are lighting up Sheffield learners’ career aspirations, with 17% of the qualifications gained falling into the electrical industry
  • Popular TV soaps Casualty and Holby City’s presence in Bristol has inspired more Bristolians to pursue a qualification in the healthcare industry than any other field
  • Manchester’s streets should be the best in the country, with more qualifications in streetworks gained here than in any other sector
  • Nottingham is defying the overall impact of the dot.com crash, with one in five learners gaining a qualification in the IT industry
  • Scots will cut a style and put the English to shame, as the popularity of hairdressing and beauty courses within City & Guilds’ top 20 qualifications rose by more than 25 per cent in the last year.
