Royal award for energy supremo - [23 May 2007]
Chairman of Energy Development Partners, Larry Kinch, has been awarded a prestigious Certificate of Achievement by His Royal Highness, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip.
His Royal Highness is the President of the City & Guilds of London Institute, the UK’s leading awarding body for work-related qualifications, and Larry has been chosen as one of two recipients this year in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the energy industry.
Speaking ahead of the official presentation ceremony, Larry said: ‘I have worked in energy for as long as I can remember. To receive royal recognition for my work over the years is truly an honour.’
Born in Aberdeen, Larry started out as an apprentice at Culter Paper Mill at the age of 16. From there he went into instrument engineering at Shell, via a stint as a service engineer at Schlumberger.
After a successful spell at BP, Larry returned to his hometown of Aberdeen to set up his own energy company, Petroleum Engineering Services, which specialised on manufacturing tools for the oil industry and developing technology to improve the recovery of hydrocarbons from reservoirs.
Director General of City & Guilds, Chris Humphries, said: ‘Larry has used his knowledge of and passion for the oil industry to develop technology that is vital to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the industry. He has also achieved impressive commercial success during his many years in the trade and is a real example of how having a work-related qualification can set you on the right path to a long and productive career.’
