Skills experts singled out the healthcare sector in recognition of its ever-growing appetite for learning, as a new study revealed a significant rise in the number of learners gaining healthcare qualifications. 

City & Guilds released a new study tracking the uptake of its most popular vocational qualifications in the UK over the last 10 years, the healthcare industry was applauded for its commitment to learning and development.

The sector’s ability to attract new students was clear from the seven per cent increase in City & Guilds awards gained in healthcare during this time.  Based on the organisation’s top 20 awards, the sector saw over 40,000 qualifications being awarded in 2006-07. 

The research revealed a number of pioneering cities across the country that have nursed their talents and developed a taste for the healthcare trade:

  • Bristol bounced to the top as healthcare capital of the UK as the popularity of courses rose 11 per cent. Based on City & Guilds’ top 20 qualifications, almost 3,000 healthcare qualifications were completed in the last year alone.
  • Cardiff is flying the healthcare flag for Wales, attracting 10 per cent more learners into the healthcare industry.
  • Based on City & Guilds’ top 20 qualifications, in Birmingham, 3,705 students injected enthusiasm into the healthcare sector, demonstrating a nine per cent increase in the number of qualified healthcare professionals.
