This award covers the training of drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods in tanks or tank containers and in packages. In order to be legally qualified to drive such a vehicle, a driver must be in possession of an ADR vocational training certificate issued under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (Driver Training) Regulations 1996. City & Guilds works in partnership with the Department for Transport, Northern Ireland Office, DVLA and DVLNI to offer this one level of certificate. The 1996 regulations require drivers engaged in the carriage of dangerous goods to be given adequate instruction and training. This is to enable them to understand the nature of the dangers to which particular dangerous goods being carried may give rise, and actions to be taken in an emergency concerning them and their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. An ADR certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue. This validity may be extended for a further five years through the holder undertaking a refresher training course and passing the appropriate examinations, within the twelve months preceding this expiry date.
