There are three City & Guilds level 5 Additional Diplomas available:
- City & Guilds level 5 Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector
- City & Guilds level 5 Additional Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector
- City & Guilds level 5 Additional Diploma in Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector
About the qualifications
These qualifications have a total minimum credit value of 45 credits each and consist of two mandatory modules which aggregate the units as outlined in the Professional Standards for English and Mathematics Subject Specialist Teachers and Trainers. This model again provides a condensed approach to the Standards, offering candidates and course deliverers a succinct qualification tailored to their learning and delivery needs. Upon completion of the additional diploma(s) and a full generiac Diploma (120 credits) or equivalent, successful candidates will be awarded a level 5 qualification and will be able to apply for 'QTLS status' within their subject specialism of either English and / or Mathematics.
Who should take these qualifications?
The additional diploma subject specialist qualifications are suitable for those who:
- have achieved a full Level 5 qualification and / or equivalent, eg 7407 or PGCE, allowing them to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, but would like to qualify as a specialist teacher (full role) in either English and / or Mathematics
- undertake a full teaching role and are currently working towards the City & Guilds generic Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (120 credits)
and - have access to a minimum 75 teaching practice hours in teaching within their subject specialism
- teach on a one-to-one and/or group basis for a variety of learners, across a minimum of two levels.
What do the qualifications cover?
The qualifications have a modular structure and support the development and acquisition of the skills, knowledge and practice required of the English / Mathematics subject specialist teacher in the full teacher role. There are 135 contact hours (directed
study time) and 315 non contact hours (self directed study), which includes 75 hours of teaching practice, observed over a minimum of four occasions by a subject specialist observer in an English / Mathematics subject specific setting.
