The industry

Due to the increasing trend in cocktail making and the need to provide a better customer experience, the demand for skilled bartenders is on the rise. 

Employers have long since recognised that there is a need for training in the cocktail area of bar tending.  Employers want bartenders with skills and knowledge, resulting in increased employee confidence.  Consequently, bartenders will be able to provide a product and standard of service which positively impacts on the bottom line profit of the business.  Establishments also understand that they must work harder to combat the downward trend in the ‘on trade’, and that the market demands greater choice in an increasingly competitive market.

The qualification

In response to the need for an industry standard, we were approached by City College Plymouth to work with them and Plymouth Gin to develop an appropriate qualification for this area.  The 7106 Level 2 Award in Bartending (Cocktails) meets the needs of the employer and the learner.  The qualification covers all aspects from free pouring to the responsible serving of alcohol. 

The new 7106 Award in Bartending (Cocktails) is currently being piloted by City College Plymouth and from December 2008 the qualification will be available for all centres to , subject to accreditation conditions.
