Police Operational Management - NVQ (No. 7463 )

Developed in conjunction with Skills for Justice, the NVQs in Police Operational Management are aimed at officers who are working at the rank of Inspector and Chief Inspector respectively.

At level 4, the qualification is aimed at individuals operating at the rank of Inspector or above, with responsibility for managing police activities and teams.

At level 5, the qualification is aimed at individuals operating at the rank of Chief Inspector or above, with responsibility for managing resources and teams and for strategic decisions regarding policing activities.


Qualification Structure

The structure of the qualifications has been developed to reflect the functions carried out by officers who are working at, or seeking promotion to, the rank of Inspector (level 4) or Chief Inspector (level 5).

Level 4 NVQ in Police Operational Management
To complete the full award, learners must achieve the seven mandatory units and four optional units:

  • Determine and review authorisations
  • Identify and manage operational threats and risks
  • Plan policing operations
  • Manage the use of financial resources
  • Manage activities to meet requirements
  • Manage the performance of teams and individuals
  • Promote a health and safety culture in the workplace

Level 5 NVQ in Police Operational Management
To complete the full award, learners must achieve the 10 mandatory units and four optional units:

  • Set, monitor and review strategies for policing operations
  • Formulate, monitor and review tactics to achieve strategic objectives for policing operations
  • Evaluate and improve organisational performance
  • Manage the use of physical resources
  • Maintain activities to meet requirements
  • Manage information for action
  • Use information to take critical decisions
  • Chair and participate in meetings
  • Set and manage local media strategies
  • Promote a health and safety culture in the workplace

Are there any entry requirements for learners?

There are no formal entry requirements for these NVQs; however you should ensure that your learners are in a position to demonstrate the performance evidence/underpinning knowledge requirements of these qualifications.


How are the qualifications assessed?

These qualifications are work based NVQs which means learners are assessed in the workplace performing real work activities. In addition to observation, there is a range of other methods of assessment such as expert witness observation, professional discussion, accounts and case studies. In order to ensure that all requirements are met, assessors must determine the most appropriate mix of assessment methods.
