Linda Darby - NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Painting and Decorating
Linda had spent 15 years delivering post when four years ago she decided to make change.
She felt like she was in a rut, as she had no qualifications to take her on to something new.
Having always enjoyed painting and decorating Linda did a one-day taster course at Great Yarmouth College. This prompted her to enrol on a day release course to develop a full range of skills that would enable her to start up her own business.
Linda attended college one day a week and continued working at the Post Office five days a week. She did this for three years and gained NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Painting and Decorating.
‘The course was really great’, says Linda. ‘I really developed my skills and my confidence to be able to start working on other people’s houses, rather than just my own.’
Through word of mouth, Linda built up a waiting list of customers. ‘It came to a point that I had so many requests I had to make a decision about giving up my job. I knew I didn’t want to work for the Post Office until I was 60, but it was still a big step. I made the decision to commit to my business 100% and it was the best thing I have ever done.’
‘I enjoy all aspects of the work that I do, from meeting the customers and getting to understand their needs and working with their ideas; it is really satisfying to see a job through to fruition. Being my own boss is great too, as I can organise my own work giving me greater flexibility to fit everything in.’
Hard work and good bookkeeping skills have made Linda a continuing success. She is determined to add to her skills with interior design and brick-laying courses.
‘Starting up on your own is a risk and it is scary, but it is definitely worth it. I would say to anyone thinking about a career change to “go for it”. If it is something you enjoy you will be able to make it work.’
