Qualifications in the Security industry

Public concern and Government initiatives to create a safer environment and to address the security threats of terrorism have thrown the spotlight on the security sector. The new Security Industry Authority for England & Wales (the SIA) sets out to transform the industry and its licence to practise will be mandatory for most people working in the sector.

City & Guilds, in partnership with leading bodies within the security industry (BIIAB, BPA, Maybo and Skills for Security), offers the most comprehensive range of qualifications in the sector. These awards not only support the SIA’s Licence to Practice, but provide vocational pathways in many other related areas, such as Parking and Conflict Management. The portfolio breaks down into the following five main areas:

  • Close Protection

The achievement of City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Close Protection will provide assurance to employers that a bodyguard has the essential knowledge required to do their job effectively.

  • Conflict management

Qualifications for those front-line staff dealing with the public who may encounter violent or threatening behaviour whilst at work

  • Door supervision

The first nationally accredited award for Door Supervisors - to support the SIA's Licence to Practise

  • Parking and community safety

Qualifications for the Parking and Community Safety industry - from front-line Parking Attendants to Community Safety for Accredited Persons

  • Security guarding

Qualifications for all types of security guards - from static patrol to CCTV operation

  • Security systems (inc. CCTV)

Qualifications for personnel working with security systems - from intruder alarms to electrical engineering, from CCTV to fire and emergency alarm systems
