Important update 2022
The 601/7247/2 Level 2 Technical Award in Hair and Beauty Studies (3038-21) is closing for registrations on the 31st July 2022, and will be replaced by the 610/0656/7 Level 2 Technical Award in Hair and Beauty Studies (3038-24), which has been approved by the DfE for the 2024 Key Stage 4 performance tables.  Please ensure new starts for September 2022 are registered on the new qualification. Some changes have been made to the assessment strategy, please refer to the 3038-24 Qualification Handbook in the documents section.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?
The qualification develops the following knowledge, understanding and skills:
  • specific services carried out within the hair and beauty sectors, roles and responsibilities and typical working patterns
  • evolution of hair and beauty from use in Ancient times to the mid 90s
  • how technological advancements, changes to the economy, and social factors have influenced the sector
  • chemistry of cosmetics and biology related to hair and beauty
  • uses of design and images for business use
  • technical hair styling, make-up and manicure skills

What Careers Can This Lead To?
Your understanding and skills can be developed further through progression to other qualifications, such as A levels or specific to a sector, including:
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy/Beauty Consultancy/Hair and Media Make up
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing/ Barbering 
You would also find the understanding and skills useful to progress to an apprenticeship.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?
To deliver this qualification, centres/colleges will need to provide their learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification.
