If you're skilled craft worker wanting to move into management or to begin studying for a foundation degree, this qualification is a great way to start. It's also a good choice if you want to register as a Building Services Technician or Incorporated Engineer.

The Higher Professional Diploma in Building Services Engineering covers a broad range of areas related to building services engineering, including:

The Higher Professional Diploma in Building Services is mainly assessed by coursework - so you'll need some time to complete projects and assignments.

What Careers Can This Lead To?

The Higher Professional Diploma in Building Services Engineering prepares you for a range of management and supervisory job roles in the construction industry. After taking this qualification you can use it to make up the first 120 credits of a Foundation Degree in Business Services.

You may also choose to progress to the Level 4 S/NVQ in Building Services Engineering Technology and Project Management or one of the following qualifications:

  • Level 5 Certificate in Engineering (Engineering Council)
  • Level 6 Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Engineering Council)
  • Level 7 Post-Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Engineering Council).

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Learners usually must be employed in skilled roles in the building services industry. They will usually have one of the following qualifications, or an equivalent to: 

  • NVQ in one of the Building Services Engineering sector at Level 3
  • vocational qualification in the area of Building Services engineering
  • a level of expertise comparable to Level 3 in the National Qualifications Framework.

 
This expertise must have been acquired through work experience and can be demonstrated through the City & Guilds APL procedure and/or appropriate certification.

Level 4

You choose between 2 pathways:

  • Electrotechnical Engineering Services
  • Mechanical Engineering Services.

For both pathways, there are 2 core units:

  • Health and safety and legislation
  • Applying CAD and ICT in building services engineering projects.

For the Electrotechnial Engineering Services, you complete three  additional core units:

  • Electrotechnical project design and management (double unit)
  • Electrotechnical principles
  • Electrotechnical sustainability.

You also choose a further six optional units. Some of these units are available to both pathways.

For the Mechanical Engineering Services, you complete two additional core units:

  • Mechanical engineering services project design and management (double unit)
  • Mechanical engineering principles.

You also choose a further seven optional units. Some of these units are available to both pathways.
