Last Updated: 24 Dec 2013 These NVQs provide official recognition that you are able to install and maintain commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning systems to the standards that employers are looking for. They also form part of the sector's apprenticeship frameworks. These are ideal for those working, or looking to work, as engineers, technicians and apprentices in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry. Available in the following:
  • England
  • Wales
  • Scotland
  • Northern Ireland

General Information

What's involved in studying this course

You can choose the pathway that suits your chosen discipline:

  • small commercial RAC systems
  • commercial and industrial air-conditioning systems
  • ammonia refrigeration systems
  • commercial and industrial refrigeration systems (non-ammonia).

You will learn on the job in the work environment.

Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include a portfolio of evidence and completion of set assignments.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You are working, or looking to work, in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised. You may also be an apprentice.

Level 3
You are a refrigeration and air-conditioning engineer or technician and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard. You may also be an apprentice.

What careers can this lead to

These qualifications can help you to progress in a wide range of roles within the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry, including:

  • Air-conditioning operative
  • Refrigeration engineer
  • Air-conditioning engineer
  • Refrigeration technician

Learners might also go on to take the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in F-Gas and ODS Regulations (2079).

What's involved in delivering this course

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment. 
 
You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

It is a requirement of the assessment strategy that candidates can only be registered on the Level 2 NVQ if they are registered in the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Small Commercial Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Systems (6127-01). Candidate certification for the Level 2 NVQ must be preceded by 6127-01 certification.

Similarly, learners may only take the Level 3 NVQ if they are already registered on the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Complex Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Systems (6127-02). Candidate certification for the Level 3 NVQ must be preceded by 6127-02 certification.

Level 2

This level will suit you if you are working, or looking to work, in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised. You may also be an apprentice.

Level 2 comprises mandatory, optional and additional units, including:

    Mandatory

  • maintain the safe working environment for HVACR activities
  • contribute to the improvement of business products and services for HVACR work activities
  • plan RAC work activities
  • commission and decommission RAC systems.

    Optional units

  • install RAC systems and components
  • service and maintain RAC systems and components.

    Additional units

  • design RAC systems
  • specify programmes for working on RAC systems.

    Level 3
