These qualifications cover a wide range of knowledge and skills required by those working with children of all ages and with differing needs in a range of settings.
These are ideal for anyone working with children as a childminder, in day care, crèches, preschools and schools, hospitals, primary care and community based services such as SureStart programmes. You can be volunteering or in employment - a new starter or an experienced professional or manager.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You will be able to demonstrate the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed such as:

  • Safeguarding children
  • Supporting developmental, educational and recreational needs
  • Working with families
  • Mentoring colleagues.

You will learn on the job in the work environment or a realistic workplace based learning environment.

You will gather a portfolio of evidence to meet the criteria of the qualification.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You are working, or hoping to work, in a supporting role as a nursery assistant, crèche worker, special educational needs assistant. You have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

Level 3
You are working as a childminder, day care supervisor, SureStart worker or community nursery nurse and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision, or maybe as a supervisor.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Learners must be working in a child care setting on a full or part time basis and in paid or voluntary work.

SCQF 7

This level is ideal if you are working as a childminder, day care supervisor, SureStart worker or community nursery nurse and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision, or maybe as a supervisor.

To earn a qualification, you must complete a range of mandatory and optional units, including:
  • Working with families to enhance children and young people's education
  • Safeguarding children from harm
  • Mentoring colleagues in the workplace.
