Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) and Early Years and Childcare (3605)

City & Guilds offer a range of qualifications for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) and in Early Years and Childcare for learners who are interested in developing the skills and knowledge that will lead to meaningful employment in the Early Years Sector in England:
  • The Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) (Work Based)
  • The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Early Years and Childcare (540) (approved by DfE)
  •  Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) (1080). (approved by DfE)

The City & Guilds qualification for the Early Years Practitioner ( Early Years Educator ) are mapped to the criteria for Early Years Educator qualifications, published by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. On completion learners will be able to work as Early Years Educators in England. 
City & Guilds have not set additional entry requirements for these qualifications. However please read the guidance around GCSEs requirements for Early Years Educator on the DfE's website here.
Requirements for GCSEs within the apprenticeship will be specified by the framework, which can be found here, please search for the Children and Young people's framework.  Please note that GCSEs will continue be a completion requirement of the framework.  Further information about this can be viewed here.

The technical qualifications can also form part of the City & Guilds TechBac – an exciting new framework for learning designed to give 14 - 19 year olds the technical and professional skills needed to progress from FE onto an apprenticeship, into university or into the modern jobs market.

The Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) (Work Based) is ideal for learners who are 18+ or apprentices, as it is part of the current Intermediate Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People's Workforce (Early Years Educator Pathway).
The Level 3 suite of Technical qualifications are aimed at learners aged 16 – 18; 19+.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Learners interested in the Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) (Work Based) will be required to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of early years education and care, including that they can support and promote children's early education and development, plan and provide effective care, teaching and learning that enables children to progress and prepares them for school, make accurate and productive use of assessment, develop effective and informed practice, safeguard and promote the health, safety and welfare of children, work in partnership with the key person, colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals.
Learners interested in the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Early Years and Childcare (540) will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

• Learners interested in the Advanced Technical Extended Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) (1080) will complete the following mandatory topics:
• child development
• professional development
• safeguarding children
• diversity, equality and inclusion
• positive behaviour and transitions
• working in partnership
• promoting children’s speech, language and communication
• theories underpinning practice
• supporting children’s activities
• reflect on practice and learning to improve quality of setting
• introduction into research in the early years practice
• understanding contemporary society
• contemporary theories and thinking in early years
• explore models of partnership with parents
• supporting children’s literacy, reading and writing skills
• supporting children’s numeracy skills
• innovative practice to support children’s play and creativity
• developing leadership skills
• supporting children with additional needs and disability in the early years
• working with under 3s in the early years setting.

In addition to completing the mandatory topics, learners will also select one optional unit from the following three:
• preparing for employment in the early years sector
• technology in the early years setting
• support children in early years settings acquiring a language

What Careers Can This Lead To?

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Early Years and Childcare (540) could lead to employment in supervised roles within the statutory, private, voluntary and independent early years and childcare sector in England, including assistant practitioner roles in day nurseries, nursery schools and preschools.

The Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) (Work Based)  and the  Advanced Technical Extended Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner (Early Years Educator) (180)are the recognised qualification for candidates wanting to work as Early Years Educators in England.
The content in the mandatory units fully meets the qualification criteria for qualifications for Early Years Educators set by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). The NCTL is responsible for defining the full and relevant qualifications that staff included in the specified ratios must hold.

These qualification criteria set out the minimum requirements for what an Early Years Educator should know, understand and be able to do, to be considered qualified to support young children from 0 to 5 years old.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications, centres/colleges will need to provide their learners with a suitable learning environment and the resources they need to complete the practical and theoretical aspects of the qualification.
