They are essential for people starting out in a career as an engineering maintenance operative or technician and can be undertaken within an Intermediate or Advanced Apprenticeship.

Completed in the workplace they allow people to demonstrate their competence, set against National Occupational Standards, in a wide range of maintenance disciplines.
This qualification is for anyone working in engineering maintenance. There are options to suit a wide range of specialities and experience.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

In completing these qualifications, you'll cover:

  • Complying with regulations
  • Organisational safety requirements
  • Carrying out engineering activities
  • Using and interpreting engineering data.

You'll need to be in a suitable learning environment where you will have access to all the resources you need. Assessment is via a portfolio of evidence.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2

Your work involves installation and maintenance of engineering systems. You have some knowledge and skills in the industry, likely from a role where you work under supervision.

Level 3
You've been working in engineering maintenance for some time and have a great deal of technical skills plus a sound understanding of safety, tools and equipment. You work with minimum supervision or may supervise others.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver an NVQ you need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres approved to offer the qualification Level 2 and 3 NVQ in Engineering Maintenance (1688) will get automatic approval to run the new Level 2 and 3 NVQ Diploma in Engineering Maintenance (1788).

Anyone can take these qualifications, but you must make sure all your learners can access the resources they need to complete them.

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if your work involves the installation and maintenance of engineering systems. You have some knowledge and skills in the industry, likely from a role where you work under supervision.

Level 3

Level 3 is ideal if you've been working in engineering maintenance for some time and have a great deal of technical skills plus a sound understanding of safety, tools and equipment. You work with minimum supervision or may supervise others.

There are two options to choose from at Level 3:

  • NVQ Diploma in Engineering Maintenance
  • NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance

Both options comprise of 12 qualifications. The Extended Diplomas are a requirement of the Advanced Engineering Manufacture Apprenticeship framework.
