They offer learners the opportunity to develop their skills in a number of welding processes. Learners can start with welding in basic positions and progress to complex overhead positional welding and quality assurance.

They are ideal for those who are new to welding or those looking to enhance their welding careers working in a diverse number of industries.

 

Qualifications in Welding Skills are for a range of learners - from beginners to experienced welders who need specialist skills. People preparing for industrial accreditation or NVQ Levels 2 or 3 may also be interested in these qualifications.

General Information

What's involved in studying this course

Depending on which level you choose, you will cover things like:

  • producing a tee fillet weld in the PA flat position
  • producing a corner weld in the PA flat position
  • conducting two root bend tests through 90°
  • conducting one macro section at 5x magnification
  • stopping and restarting the root run within the middle 50mm of the joint
  • conducting one nick-break fracture test from your 50mm section to include stop/start positions.
For the Level 1 and 2 Awards you'll do practical assignments and oral knowledge tests. At Level 3 you will also do practical assignments and an on-line knowledge test. 

Which level is right for me?

Level 1

You are new to the welding industry and want to gain knowledge and experience in welding work.

Level 2

You are already working in welding and are looking to develop your skills further, to increase your responsibilities and knowledge.

Level 3

You've worked in welding for some time - you have plenty of experience. You want to develop your skills further so you can undertake complex welding work and quality control.

What careers can this lead to

The Award in Welding Skills could help you develop your welding career and take on jobs that require specialist welding skills. After taking the Level 1 qualification, you could move on to the Level 2 and then to Level 3. On completion of the Level 3 qualification, you could move on to a Level 3 NVQ in Welding.

What's involved in delivering this course

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards. 

For the Award in Advanced Welding Skills, learners will do practical demonstrations and assignments, and take a multiple choice test.

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking these qualifications.

Level 1

The Level 1 Awards in Introductory Welding Skills are ideal if you are new to the welding industry and want to gain knowledge and experience in welding work.

There are four single unit qualifications available at this Level. To gain a qualification you must successfully complete five practical assignments and an oral knowledge test.

Level 2

The Level 2 in Welding Skills is ideal if you are already working in welding and are looking to develop your skills further, to increase your responsibilities and knowledge.

There are two sizes of qualification available at this Level:

  • Five single unit (7 credits) Award size qualifications.
  • A single two unit (14 credits) Certificate size qualification.

To gain a qualification you must successfully complete five practical assignments and an oral knowledge test for each unit.

The Awards/Certificate in Welding Skills could help you develop your welding career and take on jobs that require specialist welding skills.  After successful completion of this qualification you can progress on to a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Fabrication and Welding Engineering or a Level 3 Award in Advanced Welding.
