Diploma in Aviation Maintenance (Development Competence) (4608)

This qualification has been designed for the Aircraft Maintenance Fitter/Technician (Fixed and Rotary Wing) and Survival Equipment Fitter apprenticeship standards. The standards have been developed by Employers including the MOD, BAE Systems, Gama Aviation, Harrods Aviation and Marshall ADG.

 It is a competence qualification which will be undertaken in the Development phase (year 2 onwards) of the apprenticeships. This qualification may be taken in conjunction with the 2675-05 Level 3 Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance (Civil Aircraft Mechanical).

It is aimed at anyone over the age of sixteen who would like to progress in a career in the Aviation and Aerospace sectors.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You will be assessed in the workplace and must complete four mandatory units and a number of optional units dependent upon whether you are completing a Civilian or MOD apprenticeship. The mandatory units are as follows:

  •  Complying with Statutory Regulations and Organisational Safety Requirements
  • Using and Interpreting Engineering Data and Documentation
  • Working Efficiently and Effectively in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Civilian only)
  • Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering (MOD only)
  • Reinstating the Work Area on Completion of Activities

 The following are some of the optional units you may undertake: 

  • Lifting and Trestling/Shoring Aircraft for Maintenance/Repair Operations
  • Maintaining Electrical Power Systems on Aircraft (ATA 24)
  • Carrying Out Fault Diagnosis on Aircraft Avionics Components or Systems
  • Repairing Airframes and Structures
  • Overhauling Components of Aircraft Hydraulic Equipment
  • Overhauling Components of Aircraft Radar Equipment

This can lead to the following careers in the Aviation and Aerospace sectors:

  • Survival Equipment Fitter Maintenance Technician
  • Aircraft Maintenance Technician

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

This a competence based qualification where the assessment will take place in the workplace. To deliver this qualification you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially. 

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable apprentices to achieve the standard.
