This qualification has been designed for the Aerospace Manufacturing Fitter apprenticeship standard. The standard has been developed by Employers including BAE Systems, Airbus UK, Rolls Royce, GKN, Marshalls Aerospace and Defence Group and AgustaWestland.

It is a technical knowledge qualification which will be undertaken in the foundation phase (first year) of the apprenticeship. This qualification will be taken in conjunction with the Level 2 Diploma in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering (Foundation Competence) (4605) qualification.

It is aimed at anyone over the age of sixteen who would have typically achieved 4 GCSEs at Grade C or equivalent, including Mathematics, English and a Science.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You will need to complete five mandatory units:
  • Principles of Aircraft Materials and Airframe Construction
  • Human Factors and Behaviours in Aviation
  • Principles of Aerodynamics and the Theory of Flight
  • Mathematics and Science for Engineering
  • Business Improvement Techniques
Then complete a minimum of two optional units from the following:
  • Principles of Aircraft Propulsion
  • General Engineering Principles
  • Principles of Aircraft Electrics and Systems
  • Principles of Welding and Fabrication
  • Principles of Aerospace Composite Materials
  • Principles of Mechanical Assembly and Fitting
  • Principles of Computer Aided Design (CAD)
You'll need to be in a suitable learning environment where you will have access to all the resources you need. Assessment is via a portfolio of evidence. For full details of the units download the qualification handbook from the centre documents section.

The Aerospace Manufacturing Fitter standard has two associated occupations one of which you may achieve at the end of your apprenticeship:

  • Aircraft Manufacture Mechanical
  • Aircraft Power Plant Assembly

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

This is a technical knowledge qualification which will be delivered in a College or Training environment in the foundation phase (first year) of the apprenticeship. To deliver this qualification you will need suitably qualified engineering lecturers/tutors.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable apprentices to achieve the standard.

Level 2

At this level you will gain an understanding of the Principles of Aircraft Materials, Airframe Construction, Aerodynamics and the Theory of Flight. You will also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge in areas such as Aircraft Propulsion, Aircraft Electrics and Systems and Composite Materials.
