The Dental Nursing Qualification focuses on essential practical skills and knowledge for all aspects of dental nursing. The skills will complement your existing understanding of dental equipment, instruments and materials in your role within an oral healthcare team.

The Dental Nursing qualification is for people who already work within an oral healthcare team and who want to learn more about essential areas such as dental disease and treatment and maintaining oral health. It is also required by the General Dental Council as a licence to practise.

You may also want to build on your existing NVQ and VRQ Dental Nursing qualifications and move into a different progression route, such as:

  • Specialist dental nursing

  • Dental hygiene or therapy

  • Dental technology

  • Teaching dental nursing.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

This qualification will enable you to demonstrate the specialist knowledge you have developed in essential areas, such as:
  • Principles of infection control
  • Dental radiography
  • Managing plaque related diseases.
Assessment will include written examination.

The 7393-10 qualification comprises the knowledge element of the Scottish Modern Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing.

The practical element is covered by City & Guilds Level 3 SVQ in Dental Nursing at SCQF Level 7 (3232).

Learners should not be entered for a qualification of the same type, content and level as one they already hold - otherwise there are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

SCQF 7

This will suit you if you are working as a dental nurse and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard. You want to develop your skills further, perhaps moving into a specialised dental health care position.

You need this qualification as a licence to practise.

You complete four core units:

  • Principles of infection control in the dental environment
  • Assessment of oral health and treatment planning
  • Dental radiography
  • Scientific principles in the management of plaque-related disease.
