These employer approved qualifications cover a good grounding for a variety of hospitality areas such as; front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, cookery and hospitality services all leading to employment opportunities.
The NVQs are suitable for anyone either in full-time employment, or progressing from a Level 1 qualification or those who are able to start a qualification at Level 2.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You could choose an NVQ in:

  • Front office
  • Housekeeping
  • Food and beverage service
  • Food production and cooking
  • Professional cookery
  • Hospitality services.

To gain an NVQ, you need to show you've got a particular set of skills. You usually work with your training provider to review your current skills and find the best way to gain new ones - perhaps by trying new things at work, or by studying.

NVQs are assessed at work or in a simulated workplace. For each unit your assessor watches and asks questions as you perform a task, or looks at a portfolio of work that you've built as formal evidence of your learning. Then they confirm you've got the skills to do the job well.

For the NVQs in Hospitality and Catering you will gain evidence in your workplace as well as learning with your training provider.

You are already in full-time employment, progressing from a Level 1 qualification or in a position to start at Level 2.


What Careers Can This Lead To?

After taking one of these NVQs, you will have a qualification that shows employers and customers you have the skills to work in a range of jobs such as; hotel receptionist, chef, bar tender and waiter/waitress.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver an NVQ, you need qualified assessors. You can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

For the NVQs learners will need to be in a suitable work environment where they can demonstrate their skills. Learners can also undertake their NVQ within their local college.

Centres currently approved to offer the 7132 will be able to complete a fast track approval to offer the 7132-71 (Underpinning Knowledge test)

Any new entrants to the industry or those currently working in the hospitality and catering industry can take these qualifications.

Level 2

This level will suit you if you are already in full-time employment, progressing from a Level 1 qualification or in a position to start at Level 2.

There are 14 qualifications to choose from at this level, depending on the area within hospitality you want to specialise in:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality Services
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery (Indian Cuisine)
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery (Thai Cuisine)
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery (Chinese Cuisine)
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery (Bangladeshi Cuisine)
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Kitchen Services.

To achieve the full qualification you must achieve between 37 and 40 credits in total. This comprises a combination of mandatory units (9-11 credits), and the remainder from optional units subdivided into groups A, B and C.
