These qualifications are aimed at learners interested in hospitality and catering. It is both for new entrants and also for those already working in hospitality and catering.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

You can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed, such as:

  • Professional cookery
  • Front of house and reception
  • Food and beverages service
  • Accommodation services
  • Kitchen services.

You will learn on the job in the work environment or in a suitable college environment.

Assessment will include a portfolio of evidence.

Which Level is right for me?

SCQF Level 4
You have little or no experience of working in hospitality and catering and want to develop some basic skills and knowledge, as well as get an understanding of the industry.

SCQF Level 5
You are fairly new to working in hospitality and catering and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

SCQF Level 6
You have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge in your role in hospitality and catering. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard.

SCQF Level 7
You have a great deal of experience within the hospitality and catering sector working as, or hoping to progress to, a supervisor or manager.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need qualified assessors - you can train internal members of staff or recruit specially.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Centres approved to offer City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality (7131) can apply for fast track approval to offer City & Guilds Level 4 SVQ1 in Hospitality and Catering (7140-04).

Centres approved to offer City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality (7132) can apply for fast track approval to offer City & Guilds Level 5 SVQ2 in Hospitality and Catering (7140-05).

Centres approved to offer City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery (7133) can apply for fast track approval to offer City & Guilds Level 6 SVQ3 in Professional Cookery (7140-06).

Centres approved to offer City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Hospitality Supervision and Leadership (7250) can apply for fast track approval to offer the City & Guilds Level 7 SVQ3 in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership (7140).

There are no eligibility requirements, although learners may be expected to be over a stated minimum age (16 or 17 years old).

SCQF 5

This level is ideal if you are fairly new to working in hospitality and catering and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

There are 10 pathways to completing this qualification:
