General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

This Diploma is a combination of City & Guilds International ESOL (8984) and International Spoken ESOL (8985). The qualification assesses all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The language and skills assessed can be seen in the International ESOL and International Spoken ESOL handbooks, which can be downloaded from this site.

The Diploma is approved by the UK's Border Agency as evidence of English proficiency for people wishing to study, work or live in the UK. To find out more please visit www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/employers/esol-providers/ on the Home Office website.

You will learn in the classroom.

Assessment is on demand:

  • International Spoken ESOL (8985) assesses real speaking ability through a one-to-one structured interview
  • International ESOL (8984) uses a single exam paper which covers listening, reading and writing.

There are six levels linked to the Common European Framework (CEFR). The upper levels, Expert and Mastery, are recognised by many English speaking universities as evidence of language proficiency for entry purposes. You can browse our recognitions search page to see who recognises our International ESOL and SESOL qualifications, and for information about other qualifications.
