These qualifications provide valuable accreditation of the essential workplace skills and knowledge of those working in custodial care including:
  • Minimising and dealing with aggressive behaviour
  • Searching vehicles
  • Searching individuals
  •  Installing and decommissioning electronic monitoring equipment.
They could also form part of the Custodial Care Advanced Apprenticeship by including the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Knowledge of Custodial Care (5326).
The qualifications have been developed for those working in HM Prison Service or in the private custodial sector.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

Taking the qualifications in Custodial Care, you will cover the essential skills and knowledge needed in your day-to-day role. These skills will also be important for the progression of your career. You will cover things like:

  • Maintaining security and order in the custodial environment
  • Testing for substance use
  • Assisting in the transfer of individuals
  • Helping individuals to address their offending behaviour
  • Providing effective customer service.

You will learn on the job in the work environment. Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include a portfolio of evidence to meet the criteria of each unit.

Which level is right for me?

Level 2
You are relatively new in your role as prison officer and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

Level 3
You are working as a prison officer and have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard.

These qualifications will help you to become a Prison Officer.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver these qualifications you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

Level 2

Level 2 will suit you if you are relatively new in your role as prison officer and have some relevant knowledge and skills, usually from a role where you've been supervised.

This qualification comprises four mandatory and a wide range of optional units. Units include:

  • Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Search individuals, premises and surrounding areas
  • Assist in the control of incidents and emergencies
  • Maintain security using screening equipment.

Level 3

This qualification comprises five mandatory and a wide range of optional units. Units include:

  • Control and restrain individuals
  • Contribute to planning and reviewing how to meet individuals' needs and rights in the custodial environment
  • Support individuals experiencing difficulties
  • Prepare individuals for resettlement in the community.
