These qualifications have been developed specifically for police officers in England and Wales. They will enable you to demonstrate the essential skills and knowledge required for your role or for career progression. You will cover essential areas such as: providing initial support to victims and witnesses, gathering and submitting information to support law enforcement objectives, managing conflict in a policing context, planning law enforcement operations and managing investigations. This qualification is part of the apprenticeship framework.
These qualifications are for police constables seeking promotion to sergeant position, or for police sergeants seeking promotion to inspector.

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

These qualifications cover the essential policing skills and knowledge you need to successfully progress your career in the force.

The Level 5 Certificate includes optional units that allow you to build the qualification that suits your specific requirements.  Areas covered include:

  • Communicating effectively with people while maintaining the security of information
  • Managing own professional development
  • Providing leadership and direction
  • Planning and deploying resources for law enforcement operations
  • Managing a budget

You will learn in the work environment.   Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include a portfolio of evidence to meet the criteria of the qualification.

Level 4
You are an experienced police constable seeking promotion to sergeant.

Level 5
You are an experienced police sergeant seeking promotion to inspector.

What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

In order to offer these qualifications, you will need suitably qualified staff to carry out training and assessment.

You will also need suitable facilities to carry out the required training to enable learners to achieve industry standards.

You will have to be eligible to seek promotion in the relevant rank and be able to demonstrate competency against the skills/knowledge in the units in this qualification.

Level 4

Level 4 will suit you if you are an experienced police constable seeking promotion to sergeant.

The Certificate in Police First Line Management is made up of six mandatory units:

  • Manage personal development
  • Set objectives and provide support for team members
  • Conduct intelligence-driven briefing, tasking and debriefing
  • Prepare for, monitor and maintain law enforcement operations
  • Supervise the response to critical incidents
  • Supervise investigations and investigators.

  • Provide leadership and direction for own area of responsibility
  • Identify and manage operational threats and risks
  • Plan, allocate and monitor work in own area of responsibility.
